’Canes blew past competition
Hurricanes strong at home field last weekend versus St. Thomas and UNBSJ
The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s soccer teams were a combined 3-0-1 in a weekend home stand versus the St. Thomas Tommies and the UNBSJ Seawolves at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.
On Saturday versus the Tommies, the women’s took the lead early in the second half and held on for a 2-1 win while the men used early lead to pick up a 4-2 win.
Sunday saw the Hurricanes women tie the game in the final minutes versus UNBSJ Seawolves for a 1-1 draw and the men surrendered just one goal in a 3-1 victory.
The win and tie put the women’s Hurricanes at 3-2-1 and in a tie with St. Thomas atop the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association standings, while the men lead the conference at 6-0.
Both teams are home Saturday and host to the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics, while on Sunday the University of King’s College Blue Devils land in Cornwall. Games are at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, on both days.
Women Sunday Hurricanes, 1, Seawolves 1
Samantha Gallan gave the Seawolves the 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game, but the Hurricanes finally tied the game in the 90th minute off the boot of Sydney Goode.
Saturday Hurricanes 2, Tommies 1
In the 55th minute, Ali Fahie booted her second goal of the game which became the eventual game-winning goal. Fahie had scored for the ‘Canes in the 39th minute before St. Thomas’ Nikita McCartney tied the game eight minutes later.
Men Saturday Hurricanes 4, Tommies 2
A strong first half saw the Hurricanes take a 4-0 lead into the break thanks to two goals by Ibra Sanoh and singles from Charles Aondo and James Briand.
The Tommies clawed back in the second half with two scores from David Effiong, but couldn’t make up the gap.
Sunday Hurricanes 3, Seawolves 1
Another strong start for the Hurricanes resulted in 3-0 lead partway through the second half. Goals went Ibra Sanoh (2) and Eberechi Okwuwolo.
The Seawolves responded with a goal in the 85th minute by Charlie Ward.
