Hurricanes sweep through competition
Holland College goes 4-0 in CCBA Atlantic Conference action in Charlottetown
The Holland College Hurricanes swept the field over the weekend winning both ends of doubleheaders against UNB and the Acadia Axemen in Charlottetown.
Sunday, the ‘Canes downed Acadia 5-4 and 14-4 after outgunning UNB 8-7 and 6-2 on Saturday.
The Hurricanes (9-1) lead the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association Atlantic Conference and host the Dalhousie Tigers (7-5) for a the first games of home-and-home double dips on Saturday at Memorial Field.
The scene shifts to Nova Scotia on Sunday when Dal welcomes the ‘Canes for Part 2 of the matchup.
Both doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
Sunday Hurricanes 14, Axemen 4
The ‘Canes scored six runs in the second inning and six more over the next four innings to cement Game 2 and overcome a 2-0 first inning deficit.
Danny Rice earned the win, pitching four and two-third innings allowing four hits, two walks, one run while striking out six.
Matt Barlow led the Hurricanes going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, a double and three runs scored.
Hurricanes 5, Axemen 4
Josh McDonald singled to score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to secure the victory.
The ‘Canes gave up two runs in the opening inning, but rebounded by tying the game 2-2 in the second and took a 3-2 lead in the third.
Porter Smith nabbed the pitching win in Game 1 after throwing two and one-third innings and allowing a single hit.
Jesse Holman and Danny Rice were both 2-for-3 at the plate for Holland College.
Saturday Hurricanes 8, UNB 7
In Game 1, A four-run fourth and two more in the sixth and seventh would give the Hurricanes walk off victory.
UNB scored five runs in the opening inning and two more in the second to find themselves ahead 7-0 until Holland College mounted the comeback.
Tanner Banks pitched the final three innings, striking out three and allowing just one run for the victory.
Banks, Josh McDonald and Trey Dunnett all went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Hurricanes 6, UNB 2
In Game 2, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second before UNB responded with two in the third for 2-1, but then the ‘Canes rolled off a five-run fifth for the win.
Colin Arsenault went the distance for the complete game victory, allowing seven hits, two runs, two walks and striking out two.
Charles MacLellan led the ‘Canes going 1-for-2 with a three-run home run and a walk.
