The Holland College Hurricanes avenged last season’s loss in the Atlantic Football League final by defeating the Dalhousie Tigers 46-28 Saturday in Halifax.

‘Canes quarterback Brady Crowe threw for almost 200 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone. Cole Brydges had an excellent day receiving, catching three touchdowns while running back Andre Goulbourne gained more than 130 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown.

Head coach Ross Young says he was very happy and proud of the players for the way they played and prepared all week, and of the coaching staff for the decisions they made during the game.

“We beat a very good football team today,” he said.

On a cold, sunny day, the Tigers opened the scoring with a field goal with about nine minutes left in the first quarter. The ‘Canes struck back quickly with a 30-yard run by Goulbourne, finished off with a 17-yard touchdown catch by Brydges, putting the Hurricanes up 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Crowe threw a 50-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field to Samuel Valerie and the Hurricanes added a twopoint conversion to take a 15-3 lead with eight minutes left in the half.

The Tigers came back with a touchdown making it 15-10. On the next ‘Canes possession, Crowe completed a 55-yard pass to Thomas MacKenzie, then went to Brydges again for a touchdown putting the ‘Canes up 22-10 with two minutes left.

A.J. Fields recovered a Tigers fumble, leading to a 43-yard touchdown catch by Tyler Majuary, putting the ‘Canes up 29-10 at the half.

In the third quarter, the ‘Canes ran the ball down the field on their first possession, with Goulbourne finishing the drive with a touchdown.

The Hurricanes defence started getting into penalty trouble, giving the Tigers momentum and they responded with 15 unanswered points making it 36-25 with three minutes left in the third. ‘Canes safety Dennis Brown stopped a Tigers’ drive with an interception late in the quarter.

The fourth quarter started with a Tigers’ field goal, making it 36-28.

Brennan Davis, in relief of Crowe, later completed a twoyard touchdown pass to Brydges with a little over six minutes remaining for a 43-28 lead. On the next Tigers’ possession, they went for it on third down and Brydges made a diving interception.

Crowe said he has thrown four touchdowns in a game, but not in one half.

“It was good. We had a really good game. We played well and I’m happy with how our team did.”

Young said it was football game.

“We’re finding the soul of this football team. It was an important game for the players. We beat the reigning champs on their home field.” a hardnosed
