Book sale helps literacy programs
Event surpasses goal and raises more than $12,000
Thanks to a strong show of public support, last weekend’s Journal Pioneer/Rotary Club of Summerside book sale surpassed its fundraising goal of $11,500, bringing in a total of $12,120.
“It’s absolutely fantastic. All of this money will go towards literacy programs. It will hopefully make someone’s life easier and satisfying,” said Anna MacDonald, the volunteer co-ordinator for the book sale.
Although there was a large number of books sold, there were some left over.
“On top of surpassing the fundraising goal, we were able to donate children’s books to literacy programs as well as other novels to seniors programs in the community.”
But it would not have been possible without the volunteers, said MacDonald.
“Last year we didn’t have quite as many volunteers as past years. But with a large amount this year, they played a critical role in the sale.”
MacDonald encourages those interested to volunteer in next year’s book drive and sale to reach out.
Sandy Rundle, a member of the Rotary Club of Summerside, said the community group appreciates the effort by the community. “This is our largest total raised since we started the sale nine years ago with the Journal Pioneer.
It will give our club funds to use towards our local literacy programs. We can’t thank the community enough.”
