Ryan Blair Clements sentenced to 75 days in jail after drunken assault

A P.E.I. man who bit a bouncer and a police officer after he was kicked out of a Charlottetown bar was sentenced Friday to 75 days in jail.

Ryan Blair Clements, 26, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after pleading guilty to assault and assaulting a police officer.

The court heard Clements was at Hunter’s Ale House for his birthday on April 17 and was drunk when a doorman kicked him out.

Clements tried to go back into the bar, bit the doorman and fled before returning about 10 minutes later.

After he returned, the police handcuff Clements while he resisted, but he fled again.

They arrested Clements and took him to the provincial jail where he tried to flee again.

During that scuffle, Clements bit a police officer on the hand hard enough to go through a glove and break the skin.

The court heard a pre-sentence report said Clements wasn’t known to be overly aggressive when he was sober.

Clements had a prior criminal record that included a conviction for resisting arrest.

Defence lawyer Robert Rideout said Clements was remorseful and took responsibility for his actions.

“He realizes he has a problem with alcohol,” Rideout said.

Rideout told the court Clements didn’t plan to drink an excessive amount, but someone in the bar heard it was his birthday and bought $400 worth of tequila shots to help celebrate.

Before hearing his sentence, Clements said he knew what he did was wrong.

“It’s a pattern I need to change,” he said.

Douglas sentenced Clements to 75 days in jail on each of the charges to be served concurrently and ordered him to pay $200 in victim surcharges.
