Tignish ready to party

Antoinette Perry to be sworn in as Prince Edward Island’s next lieutenant-governor on Friday

-

Tignish has lots to celebrate this week.

It all starts with the swearing-in of Antoinette Perry, a life-long resident of the town, as Prince Edward Island’s next lieutenant-governor.

For the first time, the swearing-in of Prince Edward Island’s lieutenant-governor is happening outside of the provincial capital city.

The ceremony gets underway at the Tignish Parish Centre Friday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m.

Tignish council made plans during its October monthly meeting for the swearing-in ceremony and the other special events.

Council approved a large banner to be erected at the end of Phillip Street in time for the Oct. 20 ceremony to announce the town’s recent five blooms and gold rating in the Class of Champions division at the National Communities in Bloom awards ceremony.

The banner would then be available for other events that weekend and beyond.

Council will decide by budget time whether Tignish carries on with Communities in Bloom in the international competition.

Recreation committee chairwoman Judy Morrissey-Richard said a 150-member honour guard and an estimated 300 guests will be attending the lieutenant-governor’s swearingin.

A television crew will be in Tignish from Oct. 18 to 22 filming an episode of “Still Standing” with comedian Jonny Harris, culminating with a live show Oct. 22 at the Stompin’ Tom Centre.

As a tie-in to “Still Standing”, the recreation department is putting on a fall festival Oct. 21, and the television crew will be filming the activities.

Fall festival events will include a run/walk/bike-a-thon on the Confederation Trail, co-ed softball tournament, entertainment and barbecue in the park, pumpkin-decorating, scavenger hunt and other events, concluding with an outdoor movie at dusk.

To get the town nicely decorated for the celebrations council is also proposing a fall decorating contest.
