Kelly backstops Metros vs. Red Wings

The Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros spoiled the home opener of the defendingc­hampion Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings.

The Metros scored three goals in less than four minutes late in the first period, and received a 53-save effort from goaltender Alex Kelly in a 5-2 win on Sunday night.

In Sunday’s other Island Junior Hockey League game, the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers doubled the host Eastern Maniacs 6-3.

At the Evangeline Recreation Centre, the Red Wings outshot the Metros 55-39, including 20-10 and 23-11 advantages in the final two periods.

Cale Pierce (2-1) and Tanner Lund (1-2) each had three points to lead the Metros, who are now 2-0-1 (won-lostoverti­me losses). Jordan Birt (1-1) and Connor Gray (1-1) also scored while Taylor Runighan added three assists.

Alex Morrissey and Silas Handrahan countered for the Red Wings (0-2-0).

The Metros held period leads of 3-0 and 3-1.

Bronson Banks tended goal for Western.

Vipers 6 Maniacs 3

At the Eastern Kings Sportsplex, Campbell Gallant, who also added an assist, and Drew Grady each scored twice for the Vipers. CJ McCardle and Noah Stewart chipped in with single tallies. Kyle McGuigan, Easton Smith and Riley Gallant all had two assists.
