One creepy tour

Guardian reporter Dave Stewart gives his impressions on Route 6 Motel in Cavendish

- BY DAVE STEWART

There is a motel here in Cavendish where many of the guests who check in check right back out before spending so much as one night.

That’s about the best way I can put my experience at the Route 6 Motel after I was given a walk-through tour of the attraction on Tuesday by Adam Hickey, vice-president of the Maritime Fun Group, and Jessica Caseley, vice-president of marketing for the group.

There might be spoilers ahead so read on at your own peril.

The Route 6 Motel just opened this year, and according to word of mouth, it’s downright scary — and for good reason. This haunted house features live actors who know exactly when and how to pounce.

I had it easy on my tour. There were no live actors and the lights were on just enough so we could see where we were going.

But, no one else has it as lucky. My tour may have been easy, but it was still downright creepy.

This is no simple walk through the Witch’s Cave at Shining Waters Family Fun Park, also run by Maritime Fun Group.

The Route 6 Motel is a long walk, considering the circumstances. It took my guides and me more than 15 minutes to get through it — and that’s with nothing scaring us.

“It took us 15 minutes, but it felt like a half hour,’’ said my managing editor Wayne Thibodeau, one of the brave souls who went through it earlier this year.

There are floors that move and disorient you, walls that inflate out to make you feel claustrophobic and a ceiling that lowers to the point where you think you’re going to need to get on your hands and knees to get out.

This is no easy feat, even if you’re hanging on to the person in front of you for dear life — like I would be if I’m ever brave enough to go back.

I’m certainly not the only coward out there, LOL. Hickey and Caseley tell me a third of the people who show up at the motel don’t make it past the lobby.

Consider yourself warned!
