Catlin Joseph Alder gets credit for days spent in jail time after threatening people
A P.E.I. man who pulled a knife to threaten people in two separate incidents won’t be spending any more time in jail.
Catlin Joseph Alder, 29, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to several charges, including uttering threats.
Alder also pleaded guilty to stealing a bike and breaching his probation.
Douglas sentenced him to four months in jail, but Alder spent 82 days in custody after his arrest leaving him with nothing left on his sentence after credit for time served.
The court heard that on July 24, Alder got into an altercation with a man on Fitzroy Street in Charlottetown and threatened to punch him in the head.
He later pulled a knife on the same man and threatened to cut him.
The victim managed to call the police using a nearby mail carrier’s cellphone.
Alder was involved in another incident the next day when he pulled a knife on a group of three youths on the Confederation Trail near the Charlottetown Mall.
The youths said Alder pulled a rusty knife from a holster after he and a woman approached the group on the trail.
He also admitted to stealing a bike from outside the Veterans Affairs Canada office.
A Gladue report, which is a form of pre-sentence report for Aboriginal offenders, was prepared for Alder’s case.
Crown attorney Nathan Beck said the report talked about the cycle of abuse and the role alcohol played in Alder’s life and that of his family.
Alder was diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome and struggled with drug addiction, Beck said.
Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern told the court Alder said the youth had items that belonged to his girlfriend.
Before hearing his sentence Alder addressed the court to say he was sorry for the way he acted, but he was defending his property.
He will be on probation for 18 months, must provide a DNA sample for the national databank and will be under a weapons prohibition for five years.
Alder must also pay $500 in victim surcharges.
