Wolverine Classic goes this weekend

Ten boys’ teams and six girls’ entries are entered in Westisle Composite High School’s 34th annual Wolverine Volleyball Classic this weekend.

The Westisle girls and Three Oaks boys will be seeking to defend their 2016 championsh­ips.

The girls will play a single round-robin format at M.E. Callaghan Intermedia­te School on Friday and Saturday, with the top two teams after the round robin advancing to Saturday’s 2 p.m. gold-medal final.

The third- and fourth-place teams will meet for bronze, also at 2 p.m.

Girls’ matches start Friday at 3 p.m., with the defendingc­hampion Wolverines playing Three Oaks and Colonel Gray

taking on Bluefield. Three Oaks goes right back out at 4 p.m. against Sackville, and Bluefield will play Montague.

Girls’ matches are on the hour every hour until 6 p.m., and resume hourly at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with the final roundrobin match at noon.

Boys

The boys’ teams are divided into two pools of five. All their matches will be played at the Westisle gymnasium.

Following round-robin pool play the top four teams in each pool advance to the quarterfin­al crossovers leading up to the medal matches Saturday at 5 p.m.

The boys’ tournament, which will take place at Westisle, starts Friday at 3:30 p.m., with Three Oaks playing Colonel Gray and Westisle going up against Rural. The Westisle/ Rural match doubles as a P.E.I. School Athletic Associatio­n Senior AAA Boys Volleyball League match.

Matches continue on the half-hour until 7:30 p.m., and then resume on Saturday at 9 a.m., continuing on the hour until 1 p.m.

First-versus-fourth crossover matches are at 2 p.m., and second-versus-third crossover is at 3 p.m.

The semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m., with the gold- and bronze-medal matches at 5 p.m.
