Hurricanes hope to secure home-field advantage for the AFL playoffs

The Holland College Hurricanes will look to secure homefield advantage through the Atlantic Football League playoffs on Saturday,

The Hurricanes will square off against the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday in Charlottetown

Kickoff is 1 p.m. at MacAdam Field.

The ‘Canes returned home after winning three straight road games. Last week’s forfeiture by the UNBSJ Seawolves took the Hurricanes’ record to 4-1, good for second place. Although the team was awarded two points, head coach Ross Young said nobody in the organization, including the coaches and players, wanted to win that way.

“We wanted to play every game for those points,” said Young.

With the loss of a scheduled game, the team was concerned about losing momentum going into preparations to face Dal. The Hurricanes have worked all week to be ready to take on the Tigers this weekend, Young said.

“We’re up against a worthy opponent in Dalhousie who can score and defend what they need to,” he said.

The ‘Canes had a scrimmage last Saturday in lieu of the game and made some personnel changes and play adjustments.

Saturday’s other game has UNB Fredericton (2-3) in Saint John to play UNBSJ (0-5) to wrap the regular season. After the dust settles this weekend, Holland College will find out where it sits in the standings and whether it is assured a home game for next week’s playoffs.

With four teams in the league, anyone can win on any given day. All the teams get to know each other well as the season goes along, so for Young games become tighter with momentum swings making for exciting football.

“We expect a hard-fought, close football game,” said Young.

The game will feature tailgate food prepared by The Culinary Institute of Canada, music by the Holland College Welshmen Band and a 50-50 draw.

The game will be webcast by Bell Aliant.
