Islanders double Shawinigan at the Eastlink Centre on Saturday night

The Charlottet­own Islanders are suddenly playing some redhot hockey.

Olivier Desjardins first goal of the season at 16:14 of the second period stood up as the winner as the Islanders doubled the Shawinigan Cataractes 4-2 Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at Eastlink Centre in Charlottet­own.

It’s the Islanders’ fourth win in a row (5-6-1-0).

Vasily Glotov opened the scoring in the game for Shawinigan, connecting at 5:52 of the first period but it wouldn’t take long for Charlottet­own to respond.

Gregor MacLeod tied things up 1-1 with his second goal of the season at 6:47, assisted by Taylor Egan and Samuel Meisenheim­er.

In the second period, Saku Vesterinen’s second goal of the season gave the Islanders their first lead of the game, a powerplay marker at 14:13.

Picking up assists were Pierre-Olivier Joseph and Adam Marsh.

The Islanders added another one before the period was out, with Desjardins goal. Picking up assists were Sam King and Sullivan Sparkes.

In the third period, Shawinigan closed the gap as Samuel Asselin scored his fifth goal of the campaign at 15:19.

But, not to worry, Matthew Grouchy put the game away with his third goal, a power-play marker, at 19:12. Pasqual Aquin and Keith Getson picked up the assists.

Charlottet­own outshot the Cataractes 33-15.

Shawinigan was 0-for-4 on the power play while the Islanders connected on two of their five chances.

Mikhail Denisov made 29 saves in net for Shawinigan while Matthew Welsh stopped 13 shots for the win.

The Islanders stay home for a pair of games, Thursday against Val-d’Or and Saturday against Rouyn-Noranda.
