Koughan, Sanoh earn Hurricanes weekly honour

Summerside’s Phobe van der Muelen wins ACAA weekly award

Women’s hockey player Mackenzie Koughan and men’s soccer player Ibra Sanoh have been named the Holland College Hurricanes female and male athletes of the week for the week ending Oct. 28.

Koughan, a second-year goalie with the Hurricanes, recorded a 5-0 shutout versus Acadia on Sunday in Wolfville, N.S.

The Johnston’s River native studies in the human services program.

Sanoh, a fourth-year striker, scored four goal over two games and helped the Hurricanes win its fourth straight Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n title.

The Conakry, Guinea, native, who’s in the marketing and advertisin­g management program, was also named ACAA athlete of the week.

Meanwhile, Summerside native Phobe van der Muelen, a second-year centre midfielder with the St. Thomas University women’s soccer team, earned the

ACAA female athlete of the week after being the catalyst for both game-winning goals leading to the Tommies first ACAA title in 17 years.

The UPEI Panthers look to stop the bleeding when it faces the Moncton Blue Eagles in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Moncton, N.B.

UPEI (2-5-1) has lost five straight games and has beaten Moncton for its only two wins this season. Moncton (0-6-2) is winless since the season began.

The Panthers sit tied with Dalhousie for fifth in the AUS with five points. Thanks to AUS leading scorer Kameron Kielly (16 points) and Darcy Ashley and Marcus Power, each with 11 points, UPEI has a fourth overall 30 goals. Defence has been the bugaboo as the Panthers own the highest goal-against in the league with 44.

Vincent Deslaurier­s leads Moncton with three goals and seven points, while goalie Alexi Thibaudeau leads the AUS in save percentage (.924) and is fifth in goals-against average (2.37).

Saturday, UPEI hosts the AUSleading UNB Varsity Reds at 7 p.m.
