‘Kids being kids’ as fire hydrants targeted in Souris

- BY MAUREEN COULTER

Ten fire hydrants were opened in the community of Souris as part of some Halloween pranks Tuesday night, sending a gush of water through town streets.

The Souris Fire Department was also dealing with lit tires, garbage cans and picnic tables.

“It was a busy night, but it was a good night,” said Colin LaVie, fire chief with the Souris Fire Department and the local MLA, adding this year was better than previous Halloween nights. “It was just kids being kids.” LaVie said they responded to the opened fire hydrants quickly, so it did not affect the water pressure of Souris residents.

“Normally on Halloween night, we are notified fairly quick about it because there are people around and they are good to call the fire hall or stop in to the fire hall to tell us,” said LaVie, who had a team of 24 firefighters at the hall Tuesday night. “We got on it right quick.”

Howard Fitzpatrick, district commander for Kings District RCMP, said the Montague detachment did not receive a single Halloween-related call Tuesday night.

“We had quite a few people on last night, so the members were out in the communities constantly over the course of the evening,” said Fitzpatrick.

“They were busy in Montague, but from talking to the guys that worked here last night, they said it was great here in Montague, lots of people around, lots of activity, but everyone was wellbehaved.”

Charlottetown Police Services also had a quiet Halloween night.

In a statement, Charlottetown Police Services says it received a few calls of people

throwing eggs in the Maple Avenue area.

Officers also stopped a 32-year-old Stratford man on Hillsborough Street and charged him with impaired driving.

He will appear in court at a later date.

RCMP officers working in Queens County and Kings County also responded to a number of egg-throwing and minor damage complaints.
