Wild, Pride split games
It was a .500 weekend for the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild and Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League.
The Wild defeated the Saint John Vitos 6-2 on home ice Saturday night and dropped a 4-2 decision on the road Sunday against the Moncton Flyers.
The Pride lost 5-1 in Moncton on Saturday and pulled out a 4-3 decision over the Fredericton Caps on Sunday.
The Wild sits in second place at 8-4-1, one point ahead of the Vitos (8-4-0). The Flyers improved their league-leading mark to 12-3-1.
Charlottetown is 5-8-1, and Fredericton is 4-8-0.
The Wild’s next game is Friday as they pay a return visit to the Vitos, and then return home to host Fredericton on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Pride is scheduled to host the Northern Moose (46-3) in Montague on Friday at 7 p.m.
Flyers 4 Wild 2
At the Superior Propane Centre, Nash Smith scored a hat trick while Lukas Cormier added a goal and an assist to account for Moncton’s scoring.
Marc Richard and Austin Callaghan replied for the Wild, who also received assists from Thomas Rennie, Clark Webster and Chase Gaudette.
The Flyers held period leads of 2-1 and 3-2.
Winning goaltender Brandon McKenna stopped 32 of 34 shots. Caleb Coyle had a busier day in the Wild cage, stopping 37 of 41 shots directed his way.
Wild 6 Vitos 2
At Community Gardens, Frank Fortin scored twice, and Evan Gallant had a goal and two assists to pace the Wild. Also scoring for Kensington were Webster (1-1), Richard (1-1) and Ryan Richards (1-1). Isaac Callaghan, Ethan Beaulieu, Colby MacArthur and Chandler Wood added helpers.
Kensington led 1-0 after the first period, and 3-1 following 40 minutes.
Chad Arsenault made 28 saves on 30 attempts in earning the goaltending win. Saint John goaltender Ryan Holder turned aside 25 of 29 shots as Kensington’s final two goals were scored into an empty net.
Pride 4 Caps 3
At Willie O’Ree Place, Connor McGregor’s third goal of the game – a power-play marker at 18:15 of the third period – broke a 3-3 tie, and lifted the Pride to victory. Shaul Mitton also scored while Kennedy Gallant (3) and Ed McNeill (2) had multipleassist games.
Cody Gilbert, Nick Hood and Zach Spencer answered for Fredericton.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and Charlottetown took a 3-2 advantage into the second intermission.
Jonah Arbing earned the goaltending win with a 27-save effort. The Islanders directed 44 shots at Fredericton netminder Justin Dupuis.
Flyers 5 Pride 1
At the Superior Propane Centre, Julien Hebert (2), Cormier (1-2), Smith and Mark Richard dented the twine for Moncton, which led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 following 40 minutes.
Owen MacNeill, assisted by Mitton and Gage MacWilliams, netted the lone Pride goal. Winning goaltender Daniel Thompson made 24 saves while the Pride’s Ben Parent gave up five goals on 35 shots.
