Jeff Mur­phy new board chair­man for P.E.I. Lit­er­acy Al­liance

Lo­cal busi­ness­man Jeff Mur­phy is the P.E.I. Lit­er­acy Al­liance’s new chair­man of the board of di­rec­tors.

Mur­phy is a cor­po­rate strate­gist with 15 years of ex­per­tise in fi­nance, sales and mar­ket­ing.

“The Lit­er­acy Al­liance has pro­vided enor­mous value to Is­lan­ders for over 20 years,’’ says Mur­phy.

“I am grate­ful for the op­por­tu­nity to serve such an im­por­tant or­ga­ni­za­tion.’’

Hav­ing worked ex­ten­sively in de­vel­op­ing coun­tries, he has seen first-hand the im­pact that ed­u­ca­tion, specif­i­cally lit­er­acy skills, has on stan­dard of liv­ing.

Mur­phy has ad­vised gov­ern­ments in over 15 de­vel­op­ing coun­tries in Africa, Asia and the Mid­dle East on how to at­tract pri­vate sec­tor in­vest­ment to de­velop trans­porta­tion in­fra­struc­ture.

Since re­turn­ing to P.E.I., Mur­phy has fo­cused on ac­qui­si­tions and mar­ket­ing to grow his fam­ily’s busi­ness, Mur­phy Health­care, and served as ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor of Mur­phy’s Com­mu­nity Cen­tre be­tween 2013 and 2016.

Mur­phy, who has a char­tered fi­nan­cial an­a­lyst des­ig­na­tion, has sat on nu­mer­ous cor­po­rate and not-for-profit boards.

Past chair­man Ron MacDon­ald says Mur­phy played a crit­i­cal role as board trea­surer in hav­ing the al­liance se­cure two years of core-fund­ing from the provin­cial gov­ern­ment.

Ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor Jinny Greaves is ex­cited to work with Mur­phy.

“I think the staff and board have a lot to learn from Jeff and that his lead­er­ship will help strengthen our or­ga­ni­za­tion and there­fore our ca­pac­ity to de­liver qual­ity lit­er­acy pro­grams to those who need them most,” she says.
