Jeff Murphy new board chairman for P.E.I. Literacy Alliance

Local businessma­n Jeff Murphy is the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance’s new chairman of the board of directors.

Murphy is a corporate strategist with 15 years of expertise in finance, sales and marketing.

“The Literacy Alliance has provided enormous value to Islanders for over 20 years,’’ says Murphy.

“I am grateful for the opportunit­y to serve such an important organizati­on.’’

Having worked extensivel­y in developing countries, he has seen first-hand the impact that education, specifical­ly literacy skills, has on standard of living.

Murphy has advised government­s in over 15 developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East on how to attract private sector investment to develop transporta­tion infrastruc­ture.

Since returning to P.E.I., Murphy has focused on acquisitio­ns and marketing to grow his family’s business, Murphy Healthcare, and served as executive director of Murphy’s Community Centre between 2013 and 2016.

Murphy, who has a chartered financial analyst designatio­n, has sat on numerous corporate and not-for-profit boards.

Past chairman Ron MacDonald says Murphy played a critical role as board treasurer in having the alliance secure two years of core-funding from the provincial government.

the organizati­on in the right direction,” says MacDonald.

Executive director Jinny Greaves is excited to work with Murphy.

“I think the staff and board have a lot to learn from Jeff and that his leadership will help strengthen our organizati­on and therefore our capacity to deliver quality literacy programs to those who need them most,” she says.
