Hur­ri­canes sweep Ax­e­women in open­ing games

The Hol­land Col­lege Hur­ri­canes swept the Aca­dia Ax­e­women in back-to-back home games dur­ing the week­end in Eastern Cana­dian Women’s Hockey League ac­tion.

The ‘Canes won 6-0 Satur­day and 4-2 on Sun­day.

The Hur­ri­canes used a big first pe­riod, which in­cluded two pow­er­play goals, to take a 3-0 lead head­ing into the first in­ter­mis­sion on Satur­day. Jess Red­mond, An­nika Ma­son and Sam Hig­gins scored the goals. Katie-Lynn Cum­miskey, Katie Park­man and Hig­gins scored in the sec­ond to round out the scor­ing.

Macken­zie Koughan recorded the shutout.

Sun­day’s game would be much more com­pet­i­tive, with Hi­lary Dort giv­ing the Ax­e­women a 1-0 after 20 min­utes.

Hig­gins from Kate­lyn Dunn and Red­mond tied the game in the sec­ond.

With 13:09 re­main­ing, Ni­cole Gal­lant would give the ‘Canes the 2-1 lead after her point shot was de­flected. Park­man ex­tended the lead two min­utes later while Dunn made it 4-1 with 7:38 re­main­ing. Mad­die Bourque scored with 6:09 re­main­ing for Aca­dia.

Kara Ma­son picked up the win.

The ‘Canes (3-1) have road games com­ing up ver­sus UNB Satur­day at 3:30 p.m. and Sun­day at 10:30 a.m. in Fred­er­ic­ton, N.B.
