‘Canes tangle with UNB for first time this season

The 3-1 Holland College Hurricanes travel to Fredericto­n, N.B., this weekend for a pair of games against 4-0 UNB in a battle for first place in the Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey League.

Both teams have started the season with four games versus the Acadia Axewomen (1-7).

Today’s game begins at 3:30 p.m., while Sunday’s contest starts at 10:30 a.m. Both games are at the Aitken Centre on the UNB campus.

The Hurricanes enter the weekend on a three-game winning streak after losing their season opener to Acadia. So far the ‘Canes have outscored the competitio­n 17-3.

UNB has outgunned Acadia

12-2.

Hurricanes forward Sam Higgins leads the league with nine points (five goals, four assists) while Kara MacDonald of UNB is tied for second with teammate Nathalie Laplante and Hurricanes Jess Redmond with five points.

Mackenzie Koughan (Holland College) and Kayleigh Robertson (UNB) have been the star goaltender­s of the league early this season as their respective 2-0 records came via shutouts.

Including this weekend’s two games, the Hurricanes have four games remaining before the holiday break. The next games go at home Dec. 2-3, also versus UNB.

The Saturday, Dec. 2, game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Eastlink Centre; the Sunday, Dec. 3, contest goes at 11:30 a.m. at Credit Union Place in Summerside.
