A pork lover’s dream
Hunter’s Ale House wins P.E.I. Porktoberfest award
When it comes to who served up the best P.E.I. pork taco this October, hungry Islanders voted Hunter’s Ale House the winner of P.E.I. Porktoberfest 2017.
This was the sixth edition of the P.E.I. Porktoberfest campaign, a month-long celebration of P.E.I. pork created by Fresh Media, and presented in partnership with Prince Edward Island Hog Producers, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and Hometown Pork.
The beginning of October saw the campaign focusing on ‘P.E.I. Pork At Home’, which marketed multiple ways for Islanders to celebrate P.E.I. Hog Farmers by cooking local pork for their own families.
In addition to pork specials at several local markets, plus recipes and cooking tips, the campaign also introduced several new contests featuring fresh, local pork.
On Oct. 13, the campaign then switched to the traditional format focusing restaurants.
There were 18 Island restaurants serving up this year’s signature dish of P.E.I. pork tacos.
When the campaign ended, it was ‘Hunter’s Cornita’ from Hunter’s Ale House that had the highest combined rating of originality, flavour and the overall tastiness of the pork.
The winning taco featured two grilled tortillas with sweet and spicy marinated slowroasted pulled pork, crunch tortilla, mixed Monterrey Jack and cheddar cheese, jalapenocheddar sauce, sriracha sour cream, bacon, salsa, cilantro, green onion and lime.
Over the 19 days, restaurants were offering their gourmet P.E.I. pork tacos, with close to 2,700 dishes sold.
Since launching in 2012, P.E.I. Porktoberfest has seen over 45,500 dishes and more than 17,500 lbs of local pork.
The winning ‘Hunter’s Cornita’ will soon be added to the Hunter’s Ale House menu.
