Hughes, Watkins win Hurricanes weekly awards

Badminton players Emma Hughes and Josh Watkins are this week’s Holland College Hurricanes athletes of the week.

Hughes, a second-year player from Summerside, went 4-0 to finish first in women’s singles A play this weekend during the second Atlantic College Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) event of the season hosted in Charlottet­own. She joined Connor Leorick to go 2-2 and finish third in mixed doubles A action. Watkins, a second-year player from Yarmouth, N.S., went 3-1 to finish second in men’s singles A action. Hughes is studying in the pastry arts program while Watkins is in the golf club management program.

The Hurricanes finished third behind Mount Allison University and the University of King’s College.

The ‘Canes return to action Jan. 19-20 when the King’s Blue Devils host the next event in Halifax.

The P.E.I. Wave won the under-16 division of a competitiv­e ringettte tournament in Miramichi, N.B., on the weekend. Team members, front row, from left, are Georgia Fraser and Kenzy Hawkins.
