Grammy nomination for Rose Cousins

- BY ERIC MCCARTHY

Prince Edward Island singersongwriter Rose Cousins has lots of reasons to feel proud this week after learning Tuesday that her album, “Natural Conclusion,” released in February, has been nominated for a Grammy Award.

“I’m really proud of the record and, obviously, proud of the nomination and proud to be from a tiny place, kind of representing the fact that we have great talent coming out of the East.

And it feels really good at this point in my career, absolutely,” said Cousins, who is from Seaview, but now lives in Halifax.

She was running errands Tuesday morning when a friend sent her a text from Boston offering her congratulations. She didn’t know what he was talking about, but soon found out.

“Natural Conclusion” is nominated in the best engineered album, non-classical category. Cousins will learn Jan. 28 whether or not she’ll have a Grammy to go with a Juno and three East Coast Music awards.

The album was engineered by Grammy-winning Ryan Freeland.

“He’s just brilliant,” said Cousins. “Ryan, in particular, doesn’t see obstacles in adjusting to different environments and recording. He’s obviously very well-experienced and did a great job in capturing this record, and so did Joao Carvalho who mastered it and who has been mastering my work for 10 years.”

Both Freeland and Carvalho are recognized in the nomination.

Cousins said she considers “Natural Conclusion” “the best thing I ever made.”

It was produced by Joe Henry, also a Grammy Award-winner.

“Joe and I built a band together with people who we loved and who we knew would do a great job,” Cousins said of the preparation for the album.

“We brought our best people together and built a band we knew would be able to do the songs justice and would also be able to perform at an extremely high level, live.”

Cousins said the best engineered category is all about the sound of the album.

“It’s just so cool being recognized for the very unique way that it was recorded.”

The album was put together, live, over four days. She’s been touring extensively since its February release and will be heading to the United States next week for a pre-Christmas tour.

Cousins described the nomination as “this beautiful affirmation of the approach that I took to make the record and the people that I chose.”
