-

The Martha Spirituality Centre, at SDU Place (on Great George St. using the entry at the back of this building) on Monday, Dec. 4, 7 p.m., hosts Graydon Nicholas to give a presentation on the life and witness of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.

This is the fifth offering in a Canada 150 Catholic Faith Heritage Series focusing on some recognized Canadian saints.

Tekakwitha, informally known as the “Lily of the Mohawks”, was an AlgonquinMohawk lay woman who was baptized at age 19 and died at age 24. Born in present day Auriesville, N.Y., and later lived in Kahanawake, Que., in 2012 she became the first North American aboriginal person to be canonized by Pope Benedict.

Nicholas was born into a Maliseet family on Tobique First Nations Reserve in New Brunswick. He is an attorney, judge and politician who served as the 30th lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick from 2009-2014. He was the first aboriginal person to hold the office, the first aboriginal person to be appointed a provincial court judge in 1991 and the first aboriginal person in Atlantic Canada to obtain a law degree. He has been trained as a spiritual director and Group Guide of Ignatian Spirituality. In 2015 he has been named to the Endowed Chair in Native Studies at St. Thomas University.
