Students reach out to the community
Souris Regional School The Souris Regional School band concert was a huge success last week. Students from seven to 12 displayed their musical talent to the community by performing many songs.
The graduating class had a great time in the Santa Claus Parade, with its float, Santa’s Reindeer.
This week is our 18th annual Reindeer Hunt. Students will chase each other through the hallways at break, trying to clip each other with clothespins.
Students from kindergarten to Grade 9 collected items to put in Christmas shoeboxes to send to the less fortunate last month.
Kinkora Regional High School
December is the Month of Caring at KRHS. It is filled with activities to challenge students and staff to show kindness and gratitude towards others and towards themselves. The school kicked it off with a Random Acts of Kindness week.
The staff and the culinary/ foods classes are working together to prepare a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings for the students, bus drivers and seniors in the community. The dinner will be held on Dec. 20 and prepared with local produce. Appreciation is expressed to Paul Croken for providing the carrots and turnips.
Mrs. McCarthy is extending an invitation to former graduates from a variety of programs to come in to talk to students in Grade 10, 11 and 12 about postsecondary options and what life is like after high school. The Foods 421 class is hosting its first-ever seniors tea for the Borden-Carleton Seniors Club today from 2-2:50 p.m. Each foods student has been paired with a senior and will act as their host in the school library for a time of celebration. Students will prepare finger sandwiches, sweets, tea and coffee as well as enjoy some time getting to know a senior in our community.
On Nov. 23, the students in the Ag Pros made a trek to South Freetown to tour Drummond’s Christmas Tree Farm. Bryce Drummond, who was in the first graduating class of the Agriculture Certificate Program in 2003, welcomed them.
Appreciation is expressed to Peter Wynne for his work with the music program. Concert band rehearsals run every Tuesday from 3:10-4:40 p.m.
The annual Christmas concert featuring the KRHS Concert Band is Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
The last day of classes for 2017 is Dec. 22.
The first day of classes for
2018 is Jan. 3.
Final exams are Jan. 24-30.
Charlottetown Rural High School
Members of the CRHS E.Y.E.S. committee recently hosted a games and Christmas carols night with the residents of Beach Grove Home. They also completed volunteer time with the Upper Room Soup Kitchen.
There will be an all years I.B. reunion on Thursday, Dec. 21st from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the school lecture theatre for all current, potential, and former students.
Heckbert Studios will be in the school store during lunch on Wednesday, Dec. 20 to deliver grad photo orders.
Colonel Gray High School
The annual turkey dinner will be on Dec. 13 in the cafeteria. Cost is $6. Later that day, the music department’s Christmas Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the gym.
The Christmas Semi Formal will be Dec. 14 from 7– 10 p.m.
The last day of classes before the Christmas break is Dec. 22. Students will return to school on Jan. 3.

Montague Regional High School

Students in Art took part in a reconciliation project where they created an art piece that represented the reconciliation Canadians are making to indigenous people. Education on some of the current news events and traditional Mi’kmaq crafts such as porcupine quilling and printing was looked at. The finished collaboration through the Arts Smarts program will be on display at the Human Rights show on Dec. 11 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.
Exams will take place between Jan. 24-30. This year, all Grade 10’s are required to write the Senior Literacy Assessment on Jan. 24 at 9 a.m. While students will not be required to pass this assessment to graduate, the results will be used to set standards for the following years.
The Montague Regional High School Christmas concert is Thursday, Dec. 14 in the school cafeteria at 7 p.m. Members of the drama class will be presenting an adaptation of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” entitled “Mr. Scrooge Finds Christmas.” The band will be presenting a musical score for the evening and the choir will be presenting traditional Christmas selections.
