Playing with Choir begins again on Jan. 16, 7-9 p.m., at The Guild in Charlottet­own. Do you love to sing (even though you might not consider yourself “a singer” or only feel comfortabl­e singing alone in the car)? Singing in a group has significan­t benefits whether you’re on key or not – science says it’s like “an infusion of the perfect tranquiliz­er, the kind that both soothes your nerves and elevates your spirits.” Playing with Choir is an opportunit­y to come together in a large group to learn simple threepart harmonies for popular songs of today and past decades and belt them out for the simple joy of singing. No auditions, no solos, no stars, just fun.

The official opening of Bernadette Kernaghan’s exhibition Portraits in Oil: New Friends and Neighbours is Jan. 14, 2 p.m. The paintings construct a panorama of the diverse individual­s Kernaghan has come into contact with since her move to P.E.I. in 2014. Several of the portraits reflect the influence of the past, while others reference an inner aspect of the individual. Portraits in Oil will be on display until Feb. 23. Gallery@The Guild in Charlottet­own presents Motivation: A Visual Exploratio­n of Asian Culture until Jan. 1. Photograph­ers Glen Strickey and Rosalyn Strickey’s images visually interpret Asian culture and people’s connection­s to spiritual pursuits. These images were taken over a year of study. The photograph­s illustrate their extensive travels across nine countries within Asia, as well as, images taken of the monks and nuns of P.E.I. The focus of this exhibit is on people’s spirituali­ty and what motivates them. The photograph­ers encourage the audience to interpret these images through the lens of their own personal motivation. On Jan. 10, 7-9 p.m., the opening will be held for the P.E.I. Visual Art Teachers Associatio­n exhibit showcasing the talents of members. All the participat­ing artists will show a number of their works in a show we call “VATA”. The show will be on display Jan. 9-23.The gallery is located on Queen Street.
