Budgie back home

Owner reunited with pet bird that flew the coop

- BY JIM DAY

The budgie break out has a happy ending.

Sometime Wednesday, a small, olive green budgie escaped from his homemade cage and flew to temporary freedom through a dryer vent.

The bird caught the attention of some residents of a seniors apartment complex in Duvar Court in Charlottetown when it perched on the rail of outdoor steps.

Joe Bradley brought the budgie, which was dubbed Duvar but is actually named Angelo, inside from the cold.

Angelo then had two temporary homes with separate bird owners before being reunited Friday with its real owner.

Molly Nielsen, 27, of Charlottetown was thrilled with Angelo’s return.

“I love birds,’’ says Nielsen, who owns two other budgies and a parrot.

“I’m an avid bird owner.’’ She is very appreciative “of the extent’’ people took to rescue Angelo from the cold, care for it and reunite it with her.

In an Instagram post, she thanked the many people involved in bringing her feathered friend home home safe and sound.

“This is why I love our little Island, you can always count on each other . . . Angelo is home. Thank you to the four people and the @peiguardian and whoever else helped Angelo find his way home, I am truly so thankful from the bottom of my heart . . .

“He bet all the odds and is one lucky and tough lil bird.”

Nielsen believes she was likely sleeping while the bird made its break.

“They can slip through the tiniest cracks – they are escape artists,’’ she quips.

“I need to make adjustments to my home to make sure this doesn’t happen again.’’
