Paramedic receives top honour

Darby McCormick of Island EMS is based in Summerside

-

Darby McCormick, a fulltime paramedic based in Summerside, has been named the paramedic of the year by The Paramedic Association of P.E.I.

During a recent ceremony it presented the 2017 award along with years of service pins at the Island EMS Christmas party.

The recipient is chosen from the nomination letters received by a selection committee of peers. The award recognizes one Island paramedic who has shown a commitment to a high level of patient care and the advancement of the profession of paramedicine throughout their career.

McCormick, a resident of Margate, has been a paramedic for 12 years.

One of the letters supporting her nomination noted that she provides the “best possible care” to her patients and “has a way of putting patients at ease.”

She was described as knowledgeable and “super competent.”

McCormick was also praised for her automated external defibrillators (AED) project for Island schools. As president of the Queen Elizabeth Elementary Home and School, she has lobbied for getting AEDs put in all P.E.I. schools, and requested the provincial government to cover the cost of the devices, which are about $2,000 each.

“Even off duty, she is very caring and goes above and beyond for so may people,” the association said.
