A perfect showing

Hurricanes go 3-0 in ACAA play

The Holland College Hurricanes’ basketball teams won all three games on the road this weekend as the men thumped Dal-AC 104-61, and overcame Crandall 106-86 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the women outlasted Crandall 92-61.

The men went to 8-1 and are in second place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) standings.

The Holland College women sit in third place at 5-2.

Both teams host King’s College on Saturday and Sunday at the Holland College. Game times Saturday are 4 p.m., women, and 6 p.m., men.

Sunday games go at noon for the women and 2 p.m. for the men.

Saturday Men

Holland College jumped out to a 32-14 lead after the first quarter, and never looked back. The lead would be increased to 55-31 at the half, and 80-47 after three quarters.

Antonio Kostakos had a teamhigh 17 points to lead a balanced attack as six players reached double digits. Roosevelt Whyley had 14 points, 12 rebounds and a block while Jalen King (14), Kyle Lefave (13), Connor Therrien (11) and Jace Colley (10) also chipped in double digits.

Sunday Women

Lexi MacInnis and Jayla Verney both had double-doubles in the win as MacInnis drained 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Verney finished with 17 points and 10 boards.

The ‘Canes led 23-17 after the first quarter, and 54-35 at the half. A low-scoring third quarter for both teams pushed the Hurricanes lead to 69-44.

Alyssa Canning added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench while Breauna RivoliJohn­son stuffed the stats sheet with nine points, five rebounds, seven assists, four steals and a block.

The win moved the ‘Canes to 5-2 on the season, good enough for third place in the ACAA. The Chargers fell to 0-9.

Men

The ‘Canes rallied from a 31-20 deficit after the first quarter to win by 20 points, and avenge a loss to Crandall earlier this season.

Holland College took a 47-45 lead into the half-time break and extended the lead to 75-59 through three quarters.
