P.E.I. students prepare for exams, assessment­s

Charlottet­own Rural High School

Welcome to John “Johnny” Bruce, who is working at CRHS Tuesdays/Thursdays for the remainder of the year as an EAL youth worker.

A reminder that final exams begin Jan. 24, at 9 a.m., with Grade 10 students writing the pilot for the Secondary Literacy Assessment and Grade 11 math students writing the Secondary Math Assessment. The full schedule is available on the website www.therural.ca. In the case of school closure or delay, refer to the website for any updates.

Grade 12 students are reminded to go to Student Services to fill out a transcript request form indicating where first semester final marks need to be sent.

A Holland College campus tour will take place Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This provides a great opportunit­y for students to see the programs, facilities and the services offered. Family and friends are also encouraged to attend. The West Prince Campus will not be open for this event.

There will be no classes for students on Jan. 31 as this is an administra­tive day for staff. Second semester classes will begin on Feb. 1. Students are to go to their first semester homeroom to get their new schedule.

Montague Regional High School

The student council is organizing a Facebook Silent Auction for February in order to help raise funds to support school programs and outreach within the community. To donate to the auction contact Chantelle Beaton at cdbeaton@edu.pe.ca or 902-838-0835. The auction is an excellent opportunit­y to showcase products and services. The community’s support is appreciate­d.

A parent council meeting is Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m.

Exams will take place between Jan. 24-30. All Grade 10 students are required to write the Senior Literacy Assessment on Jan. 24 at 9 a.m. While students will not be required to pass this assessment to graduate, the results will be used to set standards for the following years. Students who are taking Math 521A, Math 521B or Math 521K will also write on Jan. 24 at 9 a.m. All students who are writing a B-Block exam will write on Jan. 24 at 12:30 p.m.

Westisle Composite High School

With the nearing of the end of first semester there are a few important dates to keep in mind. The last day of classes for the first semester is Jan. 23. The Grade 10 Senior Literacy Assessment is Jan. 24.

The new semester at Westisle starts Feb. 1.

Any students who will be graduating this year are encouraged to touch base with guidance counselor Mrs. Hamill regarding the applicatio­n process, scholarshi­ps and reference letters. Due dates are coming up quickly, and in cases where a deadline falls on a weekend, schools will not be accepting them past due so ensure that applicatio­ns are submitted on time. Hamill has been hosting 30-minute informatio­n sessions on these opportunit­ies. She also has a Google classroom set up for students who are unable to attend.

Any student who enrolled in the fall as a Grade 10 student will be required to write the Secondary Literacy Assessment. It will be written the morning of Jan. 24. Contact Heidi Morgan with any questions. Parents/ guardians who are unsure whether their child will be writing on the 24th are asked to check the list of names posted in the office window.

The Westisle Facebook page is checked frequently so that all comments may be addressed in a timely fashion. However, if anyone has a concern that is time sensitive, they are urged to call the school directly at 902853-8626 so that the issue may be addressed as soon as possible.

Colonel Gray High School

The final exam/assessment schedule is (mornings): Jan. 24 – Grade 10 SLA and Grade 11 SMA assessment­s, Jan. 25 – Block A exam, Jan. 26 – Block B exam, Jan. 29 – Block C exam and Jan. 30 – Block D exam.

Semester turn-around day will be Jan. 31 with no classes for students. Students return on Feb. 1 for the first day of classes for second semester.

Planning to attend Holland College and haven’t yet applied? Check out their Campus Tour Day on Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., when they will be waiving their normal applicatio­n fee. Students will get a glimpse of college life and answers to all questions. Everyone must preregiste­r by 4 p.m. on Feb. 2 at hollandcol­lege.com/campustour-day

Students should note that all universiti­es/colleges require final marks from first semester officially sent by the school. Fill in a transcript order form in Student Services before early February.

On Feb. 6, St. Mary’s University will be visiting Student Services at lunchtime and will be waiving the normal applicatio­n fee. As well, UPEI representa­tives will be at the school at lunch on Feb. 7 to answer student questions.

Kinkora Regional High School

The Grade 10 Secondary Literacy Assessment is Jan. 24. Final exams run Jan. 25 to 30. Jan. 31 is turn-around day. There are no classes. Feb. 1 is the first day of the second semester. Appreciati­on is expressed to parents who are helping provide the delicious breakfast program during exams.

Grade 12 ADP students will be attending Encounters with Canada at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre in Ottawa from Feb. 10-17. The theme of the week is Tech & Food. Sponsored by Farm Credit Canada, the week includes encounters with industry leaders, such as biotechnol­ogists, sustainabl­e food specialist­s, and agribusine­ss managers. Participan­ts will go from laboratory to field to discover the great variety of tech and food careers. Jessica Reeves facilitate­s the Academy Diploma Program in Agricultur­e and Bioscience here at KRHS.

Bluefield High School

Bluefield’s leadership class is organizing a $100 board fundraiser to raise awareness for those who struggle with addiction.

Class of 2018 grad event is Tuesday, Jan. 30, 5:30-8 p.m. at the Small Print Board Game Cafe on Grafton Street. Cost is $10, which includes admission, snacks and a drink.

Heckbert’s Studio was at the school on Jan. 11 to take orders for graduation picture packages. Anyone wishing to order a package must now contact the studio directly. All graduates must have their graduation picture take by Heckbert’s by the end of February to be included in this year’s graduation composite.
