Strong start to 2018

Academy gymnasts turn in medal-worthy performanc­es in Nova Scotia, Charlottet­own

Athletes from the Island Gymnastics Academy have enjoyed a strong start to the 2018 competitiv­e season, recording some fine results at the recent Titans Invitation­al in Dartmouth, N.S., and the Prince Edward Classic in Charlottet­own.

At Titans, on the boys side, Leland Morgan (P3 under-13), Ryan Dwyer (Elite 3), Cameron Davis (P3 under-13-plus) and Ethan Mayne (P2 under-12) all won all-around gold, while Ethan Arsenault, Josh Hammill, Jaycob Frank, Oliver Wilson and Trent Quinn all had podium finishes.

In individual events, golds were won by Ethan Mayne (vault), Leland Morgan (parallel bars and rings), Josh Hammill (high bar) Gabriel Ing (floor and pommel), Ethan Arsenault (vault) and Cameron Davis, who won gold on rings, floor, parallel bars and high bar.

At the Classic, all-around golds were again won by Cameron Davis and Ryan Dwyer, while Oliver Wilson (P2 under12) and Alex Mann (national open) also took top spot on the podium. Jaycob Frank, Trent Quinn and Trent McClure were all second in their divisions, while Ethan Arsenault and Ethan Mayne recorded thirdplace finishes.

Individual apparatus medals were won by gold Alex Zakem (floor), Ethan Mayne (pommel and vault), Cameron Davis (high bar), Gabriel Ing (vault), Josh Hammill (floor and high bar), Ethan Arsenault (vault), Trent Quinn (parallel bars), Trent McClure (pommel and parallel bars) and Alex Mann (floor, pommel, parallel bars and high bar). Ryan Dwyer won all six individual events.

The Academy girls have enjoyed an equally impressive start to the season.

At Titans, Solen Trainor (argo 6), Victoria Covey (tyro 7) and Ella MacDougall (novice 7) led the way with all-around gold medals, while there were second-place finishes for Callie Harding, Maggie Campbell and Sophie Mayne, while Callie Delaney, Bailey Burke and Karisa Quinn all came in third.

Individual golds were won by Victoria Covey (bars and floor), Ella MacDougall (vault and floor), Callie Harding (bars), Sophie Mayne (beam and floor), Bailey Burke (bars), Karisa Quinn (beam) and Alexa Mackay (vault). Solen Trainor won gold on all four pieces of equipment.

At the Classic, all-round gold was again taken home by Solen Trainor (argo 6), and she was joined on the podium’s top step by Isabelle Mackinnon (tyro 3), Lexi Scharman (novice 5) and Emma King (tyro 7). Second places went to Karisa Quinn, Julianna Axworthy, Bailey Burke, Ida Christense­n and Victoria Covey, while Eve Morris, Katie Gaudet and Sophie Mayne all won all-around bronze medals.

Individual golds were won by Isabelle MacKInnon (bars), Lexi Scharman (vault, bars, beam), Solen Trainor (vault, bars, floor), Emma King (vault, floor), Karisa Quinn (floor), Eve Morris (vault, floor), Bailey Burke (floor), Katie Gaudet (floor), Sophie Mayne (beam, floor), Victoria Covey (floor), Mia Gallant (vault), Nya Sutton (vault), Callie Delaney (vault), Madison MacDonald (floor), Grace MacKenzie (bars), Lucy Kirby (beam), and Lauren Refuse (floor).
