Hurricanes blow through Tommies
Holland College basketball teams take two from St. Thomas
The Holland College Hurricanes swept the St. Thomas Tommies on the road Wednesday in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association basketball action in Fredericton, N.B.
The women’s ‘Canes downed the Tommies 83-72 and the men topped St. Thomas 114-81.
The Holland College men went to a league-leading 11-1, while the women’s team upped its mark to 8-2, good for second place in the women’s standings.
Both squads host UNBSJ on Saturday with the women facing the Seawolves (2-7) at 1 p.m., followed by the men tangling with UNBSJ (4-7) at 3 p.m.
On Sunday, Holland College goes to Mount Allison. The women’s game goes at 3 p.m., the men play at 5 p.m.
Women Hurricanes 83, Tommies 72
Breauna Rivoli went for a game-high 24 points and led the ‘Canes to the road win.
All five starters hit doubledigit points including Lexi MacInnis (14), Jayla Verney (13), Tyleigha Nelson (12) and Ty’Keiia Beals (10).
MacInnis grabbed a gamehigh 11 rebounds.
Bridget Frazee had 20 points for St. Thomas, while Lainy Dow, Madison Owens and Charlottetown native each nabbed eight boards.
The game was close at halftime, 39-36 for Holland College, but the Hurricanes rode a 20-12 third quarter, turned it into a 58-48 lead and never looked back.
Men Hurricanes 114, Tommies 81
Jace Colley drained a gamehigh 21 points, while Michael Kayeye and Roosevelt (Chicken) Whyley each chipped in 16 points to pace the Hurricanes to the win.
Kyle Lafave added 14 points, while Antonio Kostakos grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Sam Drummond (16 points) and Travis Valanne (15 points) led the Tommies offence. Harrison Florean corralled a gamehigh nine boards.
Holland College led 32-25 after the first quarter and 62-45 at the half.
The Hurricanes salted away the win with a 26-16 fourth quarter.
