Irish heritage short courses begin

The Benevolent Irish Society is sponsoring its series of Irish heritage related short courses.

Beginning on Monday, Feb. 5, and continuing for four consecutiv­e Mondays, those interested in Irish history and heritage will have an opportunit­y to delve a little deeper into their area of interest.

No tests are involved and no previous knowledge of the subject is required. This is learning for the love of learning in an informal and fun atmosphere.

Cian O’ Morain, who will present an Overview of Traditiona­l Irish Music, has a masters degree in Traditiona­l Music Performanc­e from the University of Limerick in Ireland.

Patrick Fitzgerald will lead a group in Exploring Celtic Spirituali­ty. He has previously presented this popular course.

Tony Dolan will again present his popular course on Irish Family Names. This short course explores the origins, history, and meaning of Irish family names.

The final course offering will be Irish History (1500- present) led by George O’Connor.

The courses will be offered on Mondays, 7-9 p.m. throughout the month of February. All courses will take place at the Hon. Edward Whelan Irish Cultural Centre at 582 North River Road in Charlottet­own. The registrati­on fee is $20.
