‘Zero responsibi­lity’

P.E.I. man ‘denies any wrongdoing’ for his actions after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman

Leo Jacob Jamieson was sentenced to 60 days in jail after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old gas station employee in September 2017.

Jamieson, 27, who pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting the woman, represente­d himself during his trial and was found guilty on Nov. 23.

Jamieson appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr for sentencing in provincial court in Georgetown on Jan. 18.

The victim was working the evening shift the night of the incident.

She testified that Jamieson had been in the store earlier in the day and that she had seen him in the store before, but that he was not known to her.

Jamieson was sitting on the curb in front of the gas station waiting for a cab around 10 p.m. when the victim went to take the garbage out to the dumpster around the the building.

Video surveillan­ce shows Jamieson getting up and following the victim around the corner.

The victim said he opened the lid for her while she put the garbage bags in the dumpster. He started talking to her and she talked to him. He approached her and kissed her and then touched her left breast, removing a sticker she had on her shirt.

“At no time did she give consent to this,” said Crown attorney Nathan Beck. “The whole time she felt extremely uncomforta­ble and nervous about the situation.”

Beck said the victim felt like “she was in a dangerous situation”.

Once she got inside the gas station, the victim told her colleague what happened. They then contacted their boss and police.

“This was a highly negative experience for (the victim) and is something that she is continuing to deal with,” said Beck.

In the pre-sentence report, Jamieson admits to speaking to her at the store but denies any physical contact with the victim.

The report states that he takes “zero responsibi­lity” for his actions and “denies any wrongdoing”.

Jamieson also indicated that he would file an appeal to his conviction.

Jamieson had no prior record. In addition to jail time, Jamieson received 18 months probation, must refrained from having contact with the victim, is barred from the gas station and must pay $100 to the victims of crime fund.

There were also orders for a firearm prohibitio­n, DNA analysis and sex offender registry.
