Reading is ‘empowering’

P.E.I. Literacy Alliance needs volunteers for adult tutoring program

-

Volunteers are needed for P.E.I.’s only free tutoring program for adults.

The P.E.I. Literacy Alliance is searching for people Islandwide who want to tutor adults and help them improve their reading and writing skills through the Volunteers for Literacy program.

The alliance offers tutor training, a library of learning resources, tutor-learner matching and ongoing support.

Doug Curtis is a participant in the alliance’s Volunteers for Literacy says his reading and writing have improved with the help.

“At 57 years of age, I am just learning how much I have missed out on by not being able to read,” said Curtis. “The Literacy Alliance has helped me over the last two years. I have a great tutor.”

Margaret Knox has been a volunteer with the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance since the program began in the fall of 2015.

“I believe learning to read is empowering,” she said. “It puts each person in better touch with their world and gives them confidence. Without exception, my learners have been excited about their new ability and have been more hopeful about their future.”

But in order to help more people like Curtis, the alliance needs more people like Knox, said executive director Jinny Greaves.

“We want to support more Islanders like Doug reach their learning and career goals,” said Greaves.

“Many participants begin the program with low-confidence but with a strong desire to change their circumstances. The relationship that is formed between a tutor and a learner is best described as a ‘supportive friend.’ Part of the tutor training focuses on the importance of creating a trusting and encouraging relationship with each learner.”

Tutors and learners work together to decide on their tutoring schedule and how many hours a week they will commit to.

Tutoring takes place in public libraries across the province.

Anyone interested can contact Katie Duffy, adult programs director, at 902-368-3620 or at katie@peiliteracy.ca.

The volunteer tutor application deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 7.
