Pride loses in shootout to Saint John

-

Cole Fraser scored in the shootout to give the Saint John Vitos a 4-3 victory over the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride Sunday in New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Major Midget Hockey League action.

Charlottetown Islanders prospect Drew Johnston had a goal and an assist for Saint John while Caleb Kean had two helpers. Connor Richard and Kale McCallum also scored while Dom Rocca, Drew Elliott and Adam Bowness had assists.

Pride captain Gage MacWilliams had a goal and an assist to pace the home side at MacLauchlan Arena. Riley MacDougall and Noah Griffin also scored while Ed McNiel, Connor McGregor and Cole Larkin had helpers.

Rylan Holder made 26 saves for the win while Erik MacInnis stopped 37 shots in the loss.

The Pride held 2-1 and 3-2 period leads while McCallum struck at 13:22 of the third on a power play tie it. Saint John was 1-for-5 with the man advantage while Charlottetown was 2-for4.

Saint John improved to 1811-0 while Charlottetown is 1112-5.

The Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild rode strong special teams, goaltending, defensive play and timely scoring to a 5-0 victory over the Pride Saturday in a hard-hitting game that featured stretches of end-to-end action.

“It was a pretty good game for us for the most part,” said Wild assistant coach Brock Richard. “A few times (Charlottetown) took it to us, but we capitalized on our chances, and our special teams definitely helped us as well.”

The Wild scored three times on the man advantage and killed off all four Charlottetown power plays, including one for four minutes in the first period.

“I thought we played pretty well,” offered Pride head coach Luke Beck. “Sometimes the box score is indicative of the game, and sometimes it isn’t. I don’t think it was (Saturday).

“They scored three powerplay goals, and our power play wasn’t at its best. Down 3-0 going into the third is a long way to come back. I liked how our guys played in stints of it. We are certainly disappointed in the outcome, but we have always looked at the big picture with our group, and we will continue to build off some positives as we continue into the final stretch of the regular season.”

Evan Gallant had two goals and an assist while Clark Webster had a goal and two helpers. Zac Arsenault (1-1) and Colby MacArthur also scored. Chandler Wood had two assists while Thomas Rennie, Ryan Richards and Marc Richard each had one.

Caleb Coyle earned the win while Ben Parent took the loss.

The win improved the second-place Wild’s record to 20-6-1.
