Aces end regular season on winning note

Defenceman Madison Clarke scored the game-winning goal Saturday in her final regular season home game for the UPEI Panthers.

Clarke, a Hilden, N.S., native, was honoured with fellow graduating players captain Emma Martin, goalie Megan Sullivan and forward Lindsay Johnston before the contest.

The Panthers defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 4-1 in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s hockey action.

Shelby Foran, Rachel Colle shorthande­d and Sydnee Baker on the power play also scored for the Panthers. Leah Byrne had two assists while singles went to Sophie Vandale, Colle, Baker and Gabrielle Gray.

Jessica Desautels from Charlottet­own native Oryssya Ellis replied for the Mounties.

Sullivan made 17 saves for the win while Lindsay Wray stopped 24 shots in the loss.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first while UPEI took a 3-1 lead to the third.

UPEI was 1-for-7 on the power play but killed all five of the Mounties chances with the man advantage.

UPEI improved to 6-10-7 while the Mounties are 3-173. The Panthers conclude the regular season Saturday at Dalhousie.

The men’s hockey Panthers three-game win streak is over.

made 11 saves for the win while Matt Mahalak allowed five goals on 24 shots in 35:46 in the loss. Connor Wilkinson stopped 10 of 14 shots in relief.

Saint Mary’s improved to 179-2 while UPEI falls to 9-18-1.

The Panthers host the Dalhousie Tigers Friday and St. FX X-Men Saturday to end the regular season. Both games are 7 p.m. starts.

The Panthers and Tigers are tied for fifth place. The Tignish Perry’s Constructi­on Aces concluded the Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League regular season on a winning note. Brydon Smith scored three goals and added two assists, while Brandon Forsythe netted a hat trick, in leading the Aces to a 10-2 triumph over the North River Flames Saturday at the APM Centre.

Will Tuplin (2), Ryan Campbell (1-1) and Dawson Sellick also scored for the second-place Aces, who compiled a record of 18-8-2 and have earned a first-round bye. Brayden Handrahan (3), Brady Albert (2), Lexin Gaudet, Matt Bowness, Drake Smallman and Chase McHugh chipped in with assists.

Matt Craig and Kyle Doucette each had a goal and an assist for the fourth-place Flames (11-15-2), who will meet the Summerside CoverAll Constructi­on Crunch (11-15-1) in the opening round of the playoffs. Keirsten Steele and Brooke Soloman assisted.

The Aces, who outshot the Flames 49-15, built period leads of 4-1 and 9-2.
