Single-vehicle rollover leads to jail sentence

Kieran Atcheynum Toews receives seven days in jail for impaired driving

A 19-year-old man who was involved in a single-vehicle rollover pleaded guilty to impaired driving in provincial court in Charlottetown.

Kieran Atcheynum Toews represented himself during his recent court appearance before Chief Judge Nancy Orr.

On Dec. 9, RCMP was dispatched to a single-vehicle accident in Glenfinnan.

Police arrived and saw a vehicle that appeared to have rolled at least once into the ditch on the west side of the highway.

The officer spoke to the witnesses who advised they had followed the vehicle from the Johnstons River area where the vehicle had been swerving all over the road.

The witnesses said the driver misjudged a sharp corner and was headed for the ditch when he overcorrected and entered the ditch on the opposite side of the road.

Once the driver was finished with paramedics, he walked towards the officer.

The driver swayed while he walked, his speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol.

He was then placed under arrest for impaired driving and was taken to the police station where he provided breath samples that were more than the legal limit.

He was released that evening to the care of his parents.

Toews had no prior record.

He told the court that the drinks he had consumed were from the night before. The accident occurred at 10:35 a.m.

Toews received seven days in jail and is prohibited from driving for one year.

He also must pay a $1,000 fine and pay $300 to the victims of crime fund.
