Hurricanes ready to host

Men’s and women’s squad welcome ACAA counterpar­ts today, Sunday

The Holland College Hurricanes volleyball teams are at home for three games this weekend.

The women’s Hurricanes host the University of King’s College Blue Devils today at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. while the men’s ‘Canes host the St. Thomas Tommies Sunday at 4 p.m.

The Hurricanes women (14-3) are in second place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) standings. They enter Saturday’s match on an eight-game winning streak.

The Blue Devils (6-10) are in fifth spot in the standings.

The Hurricanes earned a straight-sets win on Jan. 14 in Halifax in the only meeting between the clubs this season.

Hurricanes secondyear player Megan LeBlanc enters the weekend with a milestone in sight.

She is just 22 kills away from the Hurricanes women’s volleyball single-season record.

Individual­ly, the Hurricanes have players leading several ACAA statistica­l categories.

Leblanc leads the conference in kills with 205 while Dana Trainor leads in digs (219) and digs per set (3.98). Sam Gerbig leads in aces per set with 0.87 and Gracie Ferguson tops the conference in assists per set with 8.13.

The men’s Hurricanes (121) enter the weekend having already clinched the top seed in the ACAA this season. The Tommies (7-6) are tied with UNBSJ for second in the fourteam conference.

The Hurricanes, who enter the weekend on a six-game winning streak, lead the season series versus the Tommies, 3-1.

Brett Butler leads the ACAA in kills (162), kills per set (3.77) and hitting percentage (.308) while Marcus Lapointe leads in digs with 104; Nicholas Menzies sits atop the assists per set category with 8.15.
