Island bantams give strong showings

P.E.I. squads take on New Brunswick counterpar­ts over the weekend

Island bantam AAA hockey teams had a solid weekend in interlocki­ng play with New Brunswick bantam AAA squads by winning two of three games on Sunday, and four of six games overall.

Sunday, the Eastern Express beat the Saint John Sea Dogs 4-3 and the Mid-Isle Matrix outlasted the Kennebacas­is Valley Kings 7-5. T

he Prince County Warriors suffered a 4-1 defeat to the Fredericto­n Blues.

In Saturday’s action, Saint John shut out Mid-Isle 4-0, the Central Attack doubled Fredericto­n 4-2 and Eastern outgunned Kennebacas­is Valley 7-4.

Express 4, Sea Dogs 3

Seth MacLeod’s secondperi­od goal proved to be the difference Eastern’s win in Montague.

The game was tied 1-1 on goals by Eastern’s Avery Brown and Saint John’s Sam Oliver until MacLeod’s snipe gave Eastern a 2-1 edge.

Jack Campbell, for Eastern, and Oliver each scored twice in the third for their respective teams.

Cole McKeigan chipped in two assists for the Express, while Jack Dickie tallied a pair of assists for Saint John.

Drew Chapman earned the goaltendin­g win over Alex Myatt.

Eastern went 1-for-8 on the power play. Saint John was 1-for-4 with the extra man.

Blues 4, Warriors 1

Andrew Gweon (1-1), Gavin Stairs and Zach Graham (1-1) scored for Fredericto­n in the second frame and salted away the win in O’Leary.

Zach Bishop added a firstperio­d score.

Carson Wood, from Garrett Culleton and Colby MacDonald, netted the Warriors’ goal on the power play.

Blake Green tallied the goaltendin­g win. Turner Ellis was tagged with the loss.

Fredericto­n’s power play went 0-for-5.

The game was tied 1-1 after one period and the Blues led 4-1 after two frames.

Matrix 7, Kings 5

Mid-Isle scored four powerplay goals en route to the highoctane win in Abram-Village.

Landon Hardy’s two goals came with the man advantage, while Reese Wyand and Angus Beaton netted the other powerplay scores.

Carson MacKay (1-2), Matthew Mills (1-1) and Harrison James had the rest of the Matrix goals. Spencer Toole had three assists and Kyle Mason chipped in two helpers.

Carter McCluskey (1-2), Ayden Arsenault (1-1), Mike McQuaid (1-1), Marcus Gray and Charlie Jackson scored for the Kings, who went 0-for-3 with the extra man.

Josh Smith earned the goaltendin­g victory over Joey MacPhail.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period, and Mid-Isle led 4-3 at the second intermissi­on.
