A 43-year-old man who sent a woman text messages threatening to kill her was sentenced recently to four months in jail.

Jason Lee Greencorn appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to uttering a threat.

Orr also sentenced him for breaching a recognizance.

Crown attorney Gerald Quinn told the court that Greencorn texted the woman over several days in January as he was making his way east from Alberta.

On Jan. 10, he told the woman he needed to be picked up in Moncton, then he threatened to kill her.

The woman didn’t travel to Moncton and instead reported the threat to the police.

Codiac RCMP arrested Greencorn in Moncton, and the East Prince RCMP brought him to P.E.I.

Quinn said Greencorn bought methamphetamine while in Toronto and told police he couldn’t believe it was him who sent the threatening text messages.

Defence lawyer Yolande Murphy said Greencorn has been living out West for the past 15 years.

In sentencing Greencorn, Orr followed a joint recommendation and gave him credit of 45 days for time spent in custody.

Greencorn will be on probation for two years and must pay $200 in restitution to the victim.

He must also pay $400 in victim surcharges.
