Katia Lavictoire Étoile Santé for February
The P.E.I. French Health Network has announced that this month’s Étoile Santé is Katia Lavictoire.
An electroneurophysiology technician, she specializes in the recording and study of the electrical activity of the brain and nervous system. Each day, she carries out electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, a test that measures the brain activity of patients, with the help of electrodes placed at strategic points on their head.
Lavictoire is originally from Clarence Creek, a small city near Ottawa.
“I completed my training in May 2016 and started looking for work. I was willing to go pretty much anywhere,” says Lavictoire, who landed her first job at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown and moved to Prince Edward Island later that year.
She likes her work.
“The Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s EEG Department is small, compared to the one where I completed my internship. However, that is an advantage for me because it allows me to perform EEGs on all Islanders, both adults and children, needing this test.
“The department and equipment are also very modern, so
I’m really lucky.”
A native Franco-Ontarian, Lavictoire grew up speaking both official languages. She
speaks French with clients when the opportunity arises.
“Sometimes I have clients who speak French. Every time
I have a francophone patient or family member who speaks French, I can feel their sense of relief when they find out I can speak their language. We have a more natural relationship.”
Lavictoire enjoys her life on Prince Edward Island.
“I like the beauty of the Island, and I love the beaches. I enjoy running, and I have been discovering my creative and artistic side as well,” she says, adding she feels “lucky” to be here.
“The people here are very welcoming and extremely generous.”
