National Cupcake Day set for Feb. 26

Chance to do something sweet to help P.E.I. Humane Society

-

Islanders are being encouraged to preheat their ovens and get ready to take part in National Cupcake Day on Feb. 26.

By doing so, they will be helping the animals at the P.E.I. Humane Society (PEIHS), which needs help to care for animals that need special care and attention.

Animal protection officers investigated over 546 cases of animal abuse and neglect and seized close to 70 animals for humane reasons in 2017. The Island community is encouraged to do something positive to support the local shelter. Participants and places to buy cupcakes are posted on www. peihumanesociety.com.

A group of animal lovers has planned their cupcake party by doing pre-orders with friends and family. They will be baking over 500 cupcakes this weekend for Feb. 26, says Shannon Courtney, who is participating in National Cupcake Day with her friends, Julain Molnar and Jessica Fritz, because they support the work of the PEIHS.

“It’s astounding how much they do on a tight budget. I also love baking and spending time with friends, both of which I get to do while helping raise money. And it’s great to have a fundraiser that’s accessible no matter how much you are able to donate - you can order a half a dozen cupcakes, contribute a small amount of money and feel good about your sweet indulgence.”

Now in its sixth year, National Cupcake Day is presented in partnership with the Ontario SPCA and BC SPCA. It is a collaborative event in support of local SPCAs and Humane Societies across the country. In 2017, animal lovers in P.E.I. raised close to $17,000. The national campaign has raised $2.45 million to date.

To participate, register to host a National Cupcake Day party and invite co-workers, friends and family. Guests can donate to the P.E.I. Humane Society in exchange for a cupcake, raising critically-needed funds for animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted. Cupcake Day parties can be held anywhere and on any date in February. Register for free at nationalcupcakeday.ca.
