Rendez-vous de la Francophon­ie 2018 starts this week

Islanders across the province are invited to celebrate the Francophon­ie through a variety of events planned as part of Rendez-vous de la Francophon­ie 2018.

Marking its 20th edition this year, Rendez-vous de la Francophon­ie will take place March 1 to 21 and feature educationa­l games and activities, film showings, songs, shows and multicultu­ral gatherings.

Hosted by the Société SaintThoma­s-d’Aquin, the Prince Edward Island Cultural Federation and other community and government partners, Rendezvous de la Francophon­ie will officially open at a ceremony at Government House in Charlottet­own on Thursday, March 1 at 10:30 a.m. with Lt.-Gov. Antoinette Perry.

To kick off the celebratio­ns, there will be a traditiona­l Acadian fiddling concert and presentati­on celebratin­g the great Acadian fiddlers of the Evangeline Region on March 4 at 2 p.m., at the Vanier Centre in Wellington.

As well, the Conseil acadien de Rustico is organizing the following events at the Centre Acadien Grand-Rustico.

On March 3 from 2 to 4 p.m., a winter trail walk of the Sentier de nos racines trail as part of Jardins de Rustico community gardens project will feature a presentati­on by Jamie Stride of Island Falconry Services, free snowshoes, snacks and hot chocolate.

On March 4 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., an informatio­n meeting will be held for families interested in hosting a family reunion at the 2019 World Acadian Congress in P.E.I. in August of 2019.

A traditiona­l music square dance will take place March 10 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. No experience needed and listeners are welcome. This event is bilingual. Bar service will be available.

A film screening of NFB films with popcorn and free drinks is planned for March 12 and 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The province will also fly the Acadian flag at Province House for the duration of the celebratio­ns.
