Change your clocks, change your batteries

People can learn more by visiting the Charlottetown Fire Department’s booth this weekend at the P.E.I. Home Show

The Charlottetown Fire Department is reminding Islanders to change the batteries in their smoke alarms, along with their clocks, on Sunday.

March 11 marks the beginning of daylight saving time, when clocks “spring ahead” by one hour.

The fire department asks residents to use daylight saving time as a reminder to change the batteries in smoke alarms and update or install new smoke alarms.

Batteries should be replaced every six months and there should be a working smoke alarm in every sleeping room and on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should also be tested once a month and replaced when they’re 10 years old.

The Charlottetown Fire Department will also have a booth at the P.E.I. Home this weekend, March 9-11, at the Eastlink Centre. The booth will include a display showing the advantages of residential sprinklers and how they offer protection from fire.

Meanwhile, members of both the Charlottetown and North River fire departments will be at McDonalds on University Avenue on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. handing out batteries for smoke alarms. Members of the Crossroads Fire Department will also be handing out batteries at the Esso Service Station/McDonalds in Stratford.
