Hurricanes are looking to solidify inaugural season with University Cup championship

-

The Holland College Hurricanes ringette team will bring its inaugural season to an end this weekend when they travel to Halifax to take part in the University Cup championship.

The Hurricanes have compiled a 12-4-2 record in Year 1 and are confident that success can be obtained this weekend as echoed.

“Going into our first championship weekend I feel that our team is prepared,” said Hurricanes player and paramedicine student Christena Visser. “Some of our biggest assets are our speed and endurance, which will give us an advantage later in the games. I think it is an even field of strong teams. If we continue to play hard and smart, we will do well.”

Hurricanes head coach Stephen Gallaway said the team’s main objective to start the season was to be competitive in the university league.

“We quickly realized after the first weekend of play that we had a team of skilled players who had the drive to win,” he said. “The girls developed over the course of the season and our opponents often underestimated us. The girls have been fun to coach. Our objective for this weekend is nothing less than returning to Holland College with the University Cup banner.”

The field also includes the Dalhousie Tigers, Saint Mary’s Huskies and Acadia Axewomen.

The Hurricanes begin play today at 9 p.m. against Acadia followed by games Saturday with the Huskies at 9:45 a.m. and the Tigers at 4:15 p.m. The semifinals and finals will take place on Sunday.
