Will next senator represent diversity?
Residents of P.E.I. can now apply for senator, but you should probably be able to contribute ethnic diversity and represent the multicultural face of Canada if you stand a chance. The reason is simple: Canada is a country that boasts strength through diversity and this has been espoused numerous times by PM Trudeau.
The face of Canada is certainly changing, in terms of ethnic diversity, due to official multiculturalism and open immigration and the Senate is starting to reflect this. P.E.I. on the other hand has never embraced multiculturalism or open immigration to the extent that other provinces have, thereby lagging behind the rest of Canada in terms of ethnic diversity; especially in its Senate representation.
In the last decade, P.E.I. has experienced a large influx of Asian immigrants and has recently accepted refugees feeling the Syrian war. With P.E.I.’s apparent lack of multicultural composition in its populace and in its Senate representation, I wonder if the next senator will reflect the changing face of P.E.I.?
If the conception of ethnic diversity is not considered in P.E.I.’s Senate appointment, I’m sure critical race theorists will forthrightly question why another old white guy of European heritage was yet again appointed and bequeathed with the elite privileges and benefits of a colonial-based government.
