Benefits pay off vet’s medical bills

-

I’m still drying my eyes and coming to terms with the wonderful generosity I received from the recent benefit auction and dance. The local Cymbria community, Sea Cadets, girls soccer team and the Lions/ Lionettes raised a total of $8,000 from neighbours and friends. This enables me to pay in full the cost of my chemotherapy, plus other unforeseen medical expenses.

I was shattered when I learned the P.E.I. department of health denied coverage. I was unsure where to turn next. My first help came from the U.K, I served 11 years in the Royal Navy. The Royal British Legion and Royal Naval Trust provide $10,000. My daughters started a gofundme campaign, raising approximately $7,000. I never imagined being in need of financial aid or of the many friends who rushed to my aid. It truly shows the goodness and compassion of people.

On one less positive note, although I served 12 years with CF Reserves and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for roughly 30 years, no support was offered. Not from Dominion or Provincial Commands or even my local branch, not so much as a get-well card.

Nevertheless, so proud to live on P.E.I. among so many amazing and caring Islanders. There are no words to adequately express my heartfelt gratitude. Thank you and God Bless you all.
