Special dinner to bring Afghan refugee couple to P.E.I.

-

It’s the Afghan food that Charlottetown loves: subtly spiced and tender, with decadently sweet dessert … a delicious taste of the exotic east, prepared in a personal style by Sara and Akbar Sadat.

With the help of an enthusiastic group of friends, the couple is preparing to offer a special dinner at Sadat’s Cuisine. It’s special because it will raise money to support the immigration of two refugees who were forced to leave Afghanistan and have been living for months in Turkey. That couple is Sara Sadat’s parents.

The dinner is on Saturday, March 24, 6-8 p.m. It is a full, multi-course meal, with the choice of lamb, chicken, beef or vegetarian (all Halal). The price is $30, and the hosts are donating $20 of that toward sponsorship of the refugees. As well, further contributions are welcome, and any donation of $50 or more is eligible for a tax receipt.

Sadat’s Cuisine is located at 223 University Ave. in Charlottetown. Patrons should phone 902-367-6631 or 902213-7420 to reserve a time and specify the choice of their main course.

Sara and Akbar Sadat have been living in Charlottetown for more than a decade. Their yearslong journey here from war-torn Afghanistan took them through Tagikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia and Turkey. Once on P.E.I., they settled, working hard to gain citizenship, build a home and a catering service, ensure their children’s education and support their extended family. They fulfilled a dream when they opened their restaurant across from Holland College … and then re-established it in the new location near the corner of University and Euston.

Conscious of the good fortune which the Island has given them, they give back in a number of ways, including strong support of Habitat for Humanity. And now, with the eager help of their friends, they are thrilled to have the opportunity through refugee sponsorship to bring Sara’s parents to make a fresh start here on P.E.I.
