Islanders Alec O’Hanley and Brian Murphy in band that won alternativ­e album of the year

Two musicians from P.E.I. part of award-winning group, Alvvays, at this year’s Junos.

A band with a P.E.I. connection took home prize hardware at the 2018 Junos in Vancouver on Sunday night.

Alvvays (pronounced “Always”) won alternativ­e album of the year for “Antisocial­ites”. The band’s second studio album was released this past September.

Formed in Toronto in 2011, the Canadian indie pop band consists of vocalist Molly Rankin, keyboardis­t Kerri MacLellan and drummer Sheridan Riley, along with P.E.I. natives Alec O’Hanley (guitar) and bassist Brian Murphy.

O’Hanley, a Charlottet­own native, is known for his work with the P.E.I. award-winning group Two Hours Traffic. Rankin, the group’s singer-songwriter, is the daughter of the late John Morris Rankin, who was a fiddler with the Celtic folk family collective, the Rankin Family.

to contact Alvvays, but because the band is in the middle a North American tour, members were unavailabl­e for an interview.

Hosted by Michael Bublé, and featuring a Barenaked Ladies

reunion with Steven Page, the event took place at the Rogers Arena.

Alvvays was one of three artists with P.E.I. connection­s that received Juno nomination­s this year.

The others were Rose Cousins and the East Pointers.
