GUARDIAN NABS AJA NOMINATION
Guardian named a finalist in an Atlantic Journalism Award category
The Atlantic Journalism Awards has nominated The Guardian for its special edition on poverty in P.E.I.
The April 6, 2017, edition earned The Guardian a nomination for best page presentation.
The Guardian took the unprecedented step of devoting an entire print-edition to the issue of poverty with every section telling the stories of Islanders in need and the people who help them.
The edition, “The Price of Poverty, Is P.E.I. Winning the War on Poverty?” helped spark conversations across the province about the impact of poverty on Islanders and highlighted one of the biggest challenges P.E.I. faces.
Those conversations included a full day of debate in P.E.I.’s legislative assembly as MLAs discussed this crucial issue.
The special edition of The Guardian also sparked debate in the Senate of Canada.
The Guardian wasn’t the only news organization in P.E.I. to receive an Atlantic Journalism Award nomination.
The Guardian’s sister newspaper, the Journal Pioneer in Summerside, received a nomination. Cartoonist Wayne Wright was nominated in the editorial cartooning category.
In total, SaltWire Network papers hauled in 12 nominations in categories that included photojournalism, enterprise reporting and commentary.
CBC P.E.I. also received a nomination for best radio newscast for its 4:30 p.m. broadcast on July 26, 2017.
The Atlantic Journalism Awards will be presented during a gala reception and awards show on Saturday, April 28, at the Halifax Harbourfront Marriot Hotel.
