Peewee Abbies finish fifth

The Charlottet­own Abbies dropped a pair of two-goal decisions Saturday to end their tournament at the Bell Aliant Atlantic peewee AAA hockey championsh­ip in Edmundston, N.B.

The Island champs lost 5-3 to the Tricom Thunder from Newfoundla­nd and Labrador and 7-5 to the Moncton Hawks. They finished the tournament fifth with an overtime loss and three regulation losses. The host Nord-Ouest Pionniers defeated the Bedford Blues 6-3 in Sunday’s final.

Thunder 5, Abbies 3

The Abbies led the Thubder 2-0 after the first period but went to the second intermissi­on trailing 3-2.

Ryan Loveless had two goals and an assist in the win.

Cam Squires had two goals for Charlottet­own while Finn Morris had a goal and an assist. Max Sentner, Brennan Murphy and Creegan Tompkins all added an assist.

Sam Casford was the Abbies goalie.

Hawks 7 Abbies 5

Rowan Hopper had a goal and three helpers while Preston Lounsbury had the hat trick to lead Moncton.

Brett Arsenault tallied three times for the Abbies while Brennan Murphy had a trio of helpers.

Squires had a goal and an assist while Sentner also scored. Morris, Jonah MacDonald and Tompkins each had an assist. Casford was in goalie.

The Abbies led 5-3 after the first period, but the game was tied 5-5 heading to the third.

The Abbies Nathan Mossey was named the tournament’s top defenceman while Bradly Nadeau from the host squad was the MVP.
